A great-grandson of John, grandson of John Quincy, and brother of Brooks, Henry produced books of vivid detail, strong narrative, and thorough scholarship. Though he never held elective office, Adams as a young man functioned as his father’s secretary when Charles Francis served in Congress and as minister to the Court of Saint James’s. Henry would later be a journalist, a professor of medieval history at Harvard, a novelist, and the author of The Education of Henry Adams, a memoir and portrait of his times that remains a staple of American studies programs.
Senate. President James Madison named him minister to the Russian court at St. Petersburg, then detailed him to negotiate the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. After a tour of duty as minister to Great Britain, he became James Monroe’s secretary of state in 1817. In the latter office he shaped the famous “Monroe Doctrine,” the brusque warning issued to the European powers to stay out of the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. It would prove to be a fixed principle of American foreign policy, though it bore the name not of its chief author but of his superior.
