Fifteen magnificent rings were found on the mummy of King Tutankhamen. Gold (or nub) was believed to be the flesh of the sun god Ra; symbolizing the sun, it was highly valued by the Egyptians. Silver, called hedj or “white gold” was rarer still, and therefore more precious than gold. Silver was associated with the moon and was regarded as the bones of the lunar deities.

The mother passed water over wheat and barley. If the wheat sprouted first, the baby would most likely be a girl; if the barley sprouted first, a boy could be expected. If neither the wheat nor barley sprouted, she was not pregnant. Unfortunately, no records have been found to indicate the success rate of these methods! Although a birth was a most joyous event, it was also considered to be susceptible to many dangers, as pregnant women were thought to be vulnerable to evil spirits and demons; after all, the mortality rate both mother and child was high.

When it was time to take a rest, the Egyptians used decorative crescent-shaped headrests (called weres), which were carved from wood or ivory, or cool alabaster for the most affluent (with a modest pottery version for the poor). As these were too uncomfortable to actually sleep on, pads of coarse, stuffed linen were probably used for a good night’s sleep. The headrests are believed to have helped induce peaceful sleep by protecting the sleeper from insects crawling on the floor; and figures of protective deities were inscribed upon the headrests to help ward off evil spirits, which were believed to induce nightmares.
