By the early nineteenth century, however, farmers were considering ways to bring more light inside their farm buildings. One approach was to install transom lights above the main south-facing doors. In 1824, an observer noted the result with approval: In passing through the country a few weeks since, I came across a barn differently constructed from any in this vicinity; and I think for neatness and convenience of construction it was superior to any I have ever seen. There were twelve squares of glass arranged over the door to admit light when the large doors were shut; besides a small window in each of the gable ends, very near the ridge, for the same purpose.
