Sir Thomas sent the bulk of his troops back towards Hull and covered their retreat with a mounted rearguard. The initial clash between Fairfax and the Royalist advance guard took place just north of Beverley. Fairfax then withdrew into the town, closely followed by the enemy, and a bloody skirmish took place. Fairfax had some difficulty in extricating his men from the town and then continued to fight a gallant rearguard action most of the way back to Hull. The Royalist army, 12,000 strong, continued to move into position and on 2 September the siege began.
After some negotiation, Newcastle’s army marched south on 1 December, arriving at York on the 3rd. Lord Fairfax had stationed his troops at Tadcaster, just to the west of York. On the 7th Newcastle marched his army of 4,500 men against the gathered Parliamentarian forces. Lord Fairfax had decided to withdraw towards Leeds but the Royalists arrived before this happened. In a hard-fought action, Fairfax’s 1,000 men held their ground against several Royalist attacks. The Parliamentarians were very low on gunpowder and had to withdraw to Selby during the night – powder was more readily available in Hull than in the West Riding.
