It comes from a shady habitat, so it does best in the landscape in partial shade and will not thrive if planted in full sun. It is also not particularly drought-tolerant. It has attractive, glossy, fragrant flowers (hence the name waxflower) in the spring, reddish, peeling bark that is attractive all year, and a very pretty red fall color.
