Its announcement in February 1999 that it was to close half of its North American plants with the loss of around 6000 jobs (about one-third of its workforce) represented a blow to an industry which had been in decline for some time in the face of overseas competition. Coming on the back of the 7500 jobs shed the previous year by the company, the new redundancies had a significant impact in those areas of the United States and Canada where Levi factories were located. The turnaround in Levi’s fortunes provides a good illustration of how an evolving business environment can impact on an organisation, particularly if it fails to recognise and respond to changing external circumstances.
