Summary. To begin, workshop facilitators should introduce themselves, describing their own interest or experiences that draw them to this topic. Participants should be invited to share their reasons for attending the workshop and to describe what they hope to gain from it. This open introduction and invitation sets the stage for sharing and candid dialogue. This beginning group dialogue allows the facilitators to make a quick assessment of participants' awareness of their racial identity and to make note of issues to be dealt with in later stages of the workshop.

As psychotherapy is not a culturally free activity, art therapists need to remain aware that cultural variables enter into treatment in ways that parallel their operation in society (Jenkins-Hall and Sacco 1991). Since the majority of art therapists are white, it is essential that they take an opportunity to increase their awareness and appreciation of themselves as racial beings. This, in turn, will significantly impact their ability to be culturally responsive and effective in dealing with a rapidly changing world.
