While similar racial background has been shown to have some positive effect on length of treatment, 'cultural responsiveness' is seen as the essential component in developing rapport and therapeutic effectiveness with clients of color (Sue et al. 1991). The development of cultural responsiveness through self-introspection and exploration has become a prerequisite for the provision of effective, culturally appropriate services. While the importance of multiculturalism is acknowledged within art therapy, few authors offer an in-depth exploration of these issues.
Summary. To begin, workshop facilitators should introduce themselves, describing their own interest or experiences that draw them to this topic. Participants should be invited to share their reasons for attending the workshop and to describe what they hope to gain from it. This open introduction and invitation sets the stage for sharing and candid dialogue. This beginning group dialogue allows the facilitators to make a quick assessment of participants' awareness of their racial identity and to make note of issues to be dealt with in later stages of the workshop.
