A new focus of interest has emerged, one which has now put linguistics and psycholinguistics in league with the powerful influence of those mechanical devices that are having their effect on all fields of knowledge. The eighties invoked a fourth paradigm, the computational paradigm, obviously catalyzed by the use of computers as models of language processing functions. Language is now seen as a symbolic process, enabling decisions based on knowledge, and not as the ultimate and only interesting knowledge set.

Acoustic studies have shown us that a single acoustic cue carries information about successive sound segments, and this parallel transmission presents us with overlapping information about several sounds at the same time. Secondly, there is seldom a one-to-one correspondence between the units of perception and the acoustic signal, in the sense that a specific phonetic unit would Speech Perception and Production 31 always correlate with some acoustic cue. Instead, a phonetic segment may match up with several acoustic correlates; the same acoustic feature may be perceived differently in different linguistic environments, and conversely, different features may at times be perceived as the same.

But his little-known first book of 1914 pays careful homage to Wundtian psychology. Faced by the decline in the power of German intellectual life after the devastating first war and an equally weakened Wundtian cognitive psychology, his later book parallels the aspirations of the powerfully emerging behaviorism, but psychological theory no longer guides linguistic theory (see Kess 1983). Curiously, there was to be another period of intellectual unity, equally fertile, equally enthusiastic, and equally brief (see Reber 1987, and McCauley 1987).
