For many white West Indians, living in an environment of social exclusivity, the nurse may traditionally have been their only close contact with black people. 26 Allfrey and Drayton give sympathetic depictions of unshakeable devotion in their respective portrayals of Lally and Gip, but these portrayals read as somewhat stereotypical, in an Aunt Jemima way: the good servant, or the “good Negro”.
