They also brought a highly developed colonial bureaucracy, a formal set of town planning ordinances, a social class system, and the Catholic faith. Because many regions and peoples shared these features, the origins of this house type in New Mexico are complex. The courtyard house had been common around the Mediterranean since before the time of Christ and was popularized on the Iberian peninsula during the Roman and Moorish occupations. After the expulsion of the Moors in 1492, it continued as the most common dwelling type in the southern provinces of Extremadura and Andalusia. 29 Although Spain was politically united under Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492, strong regional cultures persisted in Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, new and old Castile, Leon, Extremadura, Galicia, and Andalusia.
