I will also comment upon the various developmental processes contributing to the origins of personal identity. However, a clarification of the very concept of identity and its admittedly ambiguous place in psychoanalytic theory seems necessary at the very outset. THE CONCEPT OF IDENTITY The term identity was introduced into the psychoanalytic literature by Tausk (1919), who examined how the child discovers his self and asserted that man must, throughout life, constantly find and experience himself anew.
Erikson (1956) used the term ego identity to denote “both a persistent sameness within oneself (selfsameness) and a persistent sharing of some kind of essential character with others” (p. 12). He later dropped the prefix ego in part to accommodate Hartmann’s (1950) differentiation between ego and self. Erikson emphasized that identity could have many connotations and may refer at one time to a conscious sense of individual identity; at another to an unconscious striving for a continuity of personal character; at a third, as a criterion for the silent doings of ego synthesis; and finally, as a maintenance of an inner solidarity with group’s ideals and identity.
