The advocacy of concerned citizens in the early part of the century, along with the Alabama-Coushattas’ ongoing recognition of their traditional tribal bonds, established an important precedent that other tribes like the Tigua and the Kickapoo followed. All three tribes faced serious threats to their tribal integrity at various times due to reduction of trusteeship responsibilities, assimilation, migration, and a variety of social ills. Despite the challenges to their tribal integrity the recognized tribes of Texas have not only maintained their existence, but they have flourished.
