However, there are no revelations to be had here, for, as we have seen, the Church grafted Sainte-Baume onto the Magdalene story to make it parallel the life of another prostitute-saint, Mary the Egyptian, and at the time of the Magdalene’s supposed time there the grotto was a centre of pagan goddess worship. The myth had the double value of making the maverick Magdalene into someone easier for the Church to patronize, and of turning a former pagan site into a focus for Christian pilgrims. From Sainte Baume the road continues on to the supposed site of the Magdalene’s death and burial, Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, where her annual festival was in full swing.

These documents—of which there are over fifty—were discovered in 1945 at Nag Hammadi in Egypt and are a collection of early Gnostic Christian texts, the originals of some of which are acknowledged to date from roughly the same time as the canonical Gospels11. They are writings that were condemned as ‘heretical’ by the early Church and were therefore systematically sought out and destroyed, as if they contained some great secret that was potentially dangerous to the emerging Establishment. What many of these forbidden texts proclaim was the pre-eminence of Mary Magdalene: one of them is even calledThe Gospel of Mary .

Christians everywhere denounced it as sensationalism, sacrilege and blasphemy. But the real reason for this outrage was nothing less than the underlying atavistic fear and hatred of women. Traditionally they are seen as basically unclean and their physical proximity as polluting to the body, mind and spirit of naturally good pure men; surely the Son of God could never have put himself in such mortal danger. The horror felt at the idea of Jesus, of all men, being the sexual partner of any woman is multiplied a thousandfold when his lover is named as Mary Magdalene—a known prostitute.
