Born in Hollywood on October 4, 1947, Sweeney was a middle child: he had an older and a younger brother, an echo of the birth order in Judi Bari’s family. His father, Don Sweeney, had been born and raised in Los Angeles, leaving when World War II broke out to become a war reporter. While stationed in London, he met an Irish woman named Anna, whom he married and brought back home.

By the time Bari met him, Sweeney had gone to adulteducation school and become certified as a heating, refrigeration and air conditioning engineer. He was also a radical labor organizer and the editor of the militant Retail Clerks’ newsletters, Checkout and Wildcat. ” She would later tell one interviewer that Sweeney “was good in those days,” meaning politically.
