The loss of the University of Illinois seemed to take the fight out of the city. There is no record of Jacksonville making a concerted effort for Illinois State University or Western Illinois University, two schools that could have fit nicely in town. In fact, Jacksonville seemed to resign itself to being a county seat and a premier city of learning. The city seemed to turn its lack of success into a virtue and made it a stable and comfortable place to live, do business, and learn. Besides, there was no greater school of higher learning in the state at the time than Illinois College.

In those days, almost no one on the prairie had money. The settlers made their own clothing by tanning the hides of deer and cattle for shoes while women with spinning wheels and looms produced trousers, shirts and dresses. They grew their own food, or hunted it in the forests, and the small farms provided eggs, milk, and butter. In the general stores, the settlers could trade any surplus goods for whiskey, sugar, salt, tools, crockery, or coffee. But as idyllic as this all sounds, the frontier was not without its dangers.
