Most changes come about for different reasons. A second ‘obvious’ explanation for why language changes so much is that it is to do with contact. Languages might change simply because their speakers come into contact with speakers of other languages or dialects, and start borrowing words and expressions from one another. This explanation is specially tempting in the case of English, since although English is a Germanic language, about half of its vocabulary is not of Germanic origin but borrowed from various other languages, mostly Norman French and Latin.
