The extinction of fluorescence is much more pronounced after previous spraying with fluorescing compounds (fluoresceine, acridine). A filtered mercury lamp (255 πΐμ) is a convenient light source. The UV absorption can be measured along the paper strip by analysis in a spectrophotometer. Infrared absorption may be used for quantitative analysis, as for amino acids (44). Radioactive substances can be detected by a sensitive silver bromide film pressed against the strip (autoradiography), by activity measurement along the strip with a Geiger counter or by automatic counting of radioactivity (103).
