The two constructs are obviously very closely related and sometimes it is difficult – indeed, too limiting – to try to discuss one without the other. This is especially so in the presence of those theories of individual differences on which we mostly concentrate here. Most of these theories, although purporting to be theories of personality, could more accurately be judged to be theories of temperament.
Unfortunately, catastrophe theory has so far rarely been able to specify exact, quantitative values for the parameters it proposes; this is especially true of the behavioural applications. The predictive value of the theory is therefore limited and its utility is mostly descriptive and conceptual. But for precisely that reason it does remain an extremely significant statement about natural phenomena in the present context, keeping in the forefront of our minds the very important issue of how continuity and discontinuity sit side by side in psychological disorders.
Nevertheless, Cloninger himself argues that they have proven utility in their clinical application, a claim we shall return to in the next chapter, when considering the personality disorders.
