Envisaging international operations, the airline signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the acquisition of six MD-11 s as early as 3rd July 1988. While serial numbers 48462 through 48467 were allocated, the deal failed to materialise and the aircraft were never built. The airline today operates an extensive fleet of A320s, 737s and 757-200s on its domestic network. In 1995 China Southern became the first Chinese airline to place the 777 into service. The M0-11 artist's rendering shows the planned livery of China Southern Airlines.
No attempt has been made to list all O 40 McDonnell Douglas MD-11 the individual aircraft operated by the large users, as this material is readily available elsewhere. (See the Bibliography, page 4) However, delivery details and present status of each MD-11 built are made available in the Chapter Four. With ever-changing 'corporate identities', all MD-11 liveries used by the operators over the years are described and every effort has been made to illustrate them. This includes 'one-off' and 'celebration' schemes that may have only been applied for a brief time.
The airline introduced its first transatlantic service to London in May 1982. New international services were inaugurated which necessitated the acquisition of a suitable long-range aircraft. In February 1989, American ordered and optioned 50 MD-11 s (respectively 8 and 42 aircraft). The carrier was able to take early delivery of three aircraft which had been ordered by British Caledonian but were cancelled after its takeover by British Airways. Because of contractual obligations these aircraft were refurbished at Marshall's of Cambridge in the UK.
