He was the first dean of engineering when a college of engineering was organized in 1898. Soulé Road, which runs from Northgate through the College of Engineering, is named in his honor. In 1875, the regents created a professorship of industrial mechanics, and appointed Frederick G. Hesse (1825–1911) to the position.
Edwards Stadium, the site of track and field events and a campus landmark, was also named in his honor. He retired in 1918 after 45 years of service, and in 1923 was awarded an honorary doctorate (LLD) by the university. For all of Edwards’s legendary status at Berkeley, it should be noted that for almost the entire period from 1869 to 1890, the mathematics faculty of the university consisted of professor of mathematics Edwards and at most two junior faculty members whose training consisted of bachelor’s degrees from the University of California.
