Complementary angles have a sum of 90°. Supplementary angles have a sum of 180°. Cofunctions There are three pairs of trigonometric cofunctions. Look at the relationship between sine and cosine in the triangle below. The sine of an angle θ has the same value as the cosine of an angle 90 − θ. The cosine of an angle θ has the same value as the sine of an angle 90 − θ. Trigonometric functions of an angle have the same value as the cofunctions of its complement. In a right triangle, the opposite side to one acute angle is the adjacent side to the other acute angle.

If the measurement is 5 units, the corner is a 90-degree angle. Measure 3 inches and 4 inches along the sides of a corner of a piece of paper. Mark the measurements, and then measure from one mark to the other. Is the corner of your paper a right angle? 13 Trigonometric Ratios The sides and acute angles in a right triangle can be compared using six ratios. The longest side of a right triangle has already been named as the hypotenuse. The other two sides are named in reference to one of the acute angles.

You can find an angle’s measure by using a calculator. You need a calculator with buttons that are labeled with the ratio followed by −1, for example, sin−1. These are called inverse buttons and will find the angle measure from a ratio value. On calculators that do not have secant, cosecant, and cotangent functions, you can use the reciprocal identities from Chapter 17 to find the value of the ratios. 19 Sine, Cosecant, and Side Length For a right triangle, when you know an acute angle and one of the side lengths, you can find any of the other measurements.
