Such explanations explain little. This is often disguised when the researcher chooses a given dependent variable such as a violent protest because he or she is interested in its explanation. Then the influence of independent variables is explored. The flaw in this procedure is that it is completely ad hoc: the independent variables do not imply that the phenomena to be explained are to be expected. In other words, there is no theory that leads us to expect that the phenomena to be explained will arise.

How are they selected? There is no alternative to apply theories. Thus, the basic flaw of the new perspective is that explanations by laws and mechanisms are seen as incompatible alternatives.
