The measured and calculated terms are approximately equal, indicating linear elastic stress conditions at that temperature which justify the use of equation 3. 86 and Kic obtainable by the RKR procedure. c) Fibrous Rupture Initiation and Propagation. The specimens at the upper end of the plot of Figure 5 are not included in the group defined by the preceding criterion of cleavage fracture. 86, and the RKR criterion is no longer satisfied. Ductile rupture surface characteristics are generally observed in these specimens in the region between the fatigue crack tip and the final brittle fracture.

In addition to the direct etching technique, a modified Almond et al's [4] method has been used to examine the fracture surface and microstructure simultaneously. A fractured specimen is mounted in a thermally plastic lucite and sectioned at an angle to the fracture surface. The surface that makes an obtuse angle with the fracture surface is then polished and etched by normal metallographic procedures, and the lucite is dissolved away with acetone. The edge between the fracture surface and etched surface is then examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
