People do vary on how they score compared to each other in the assessment of measurable skills, but, to be measurable, a skill has to be very basic, such as reading a list or running fast. The less basic the skill, the harder it is to measure how good we are at it and even to agree on what ‘good’ means – as in judging what is great poetry or dance. Ideas about equality naturally change with the times.

Until very recently, most women in the world would, on average, give birth to as many as six or eight children (or even more), most of whom would die before they themselves could become parents. The graph opposite shows that this is still the case in a few very poor countries. Today, across the vast majority of the world, including India and China, it is now much more normal to have three or fewer children, but there is surprising variation among the most affluent countries. It is partly because childbirth, upbringing and child protection dominated so many women’s lives until recently that (mostly dead) men’s thoughts still so dominate the general literature on equality.

In addition, new ideas and aspirations for greater equality are constantly being created and these too are guides. Old ideals have to be defended, along with what some have already gained: pensions, social benefits, free education, healthcare, housing; a very long list in affluent countries. In poorer countries the list is often a little shorter, but it has tended to be lengthening, at least until very recently. Greater equality matters because under it more people are treated as being fully human.
