The Human Genome Project (HGP) began in 1990 as an international effort to sequence the human genome. By the end of 2000, this sequencing was more than 95 percent complete. Preliminary reports were published in early 2001 by two different groups, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium (2001) and another group led by Celera Genomics (Venter et al. 2001). Although this is an incredible achievement, the sequencing of the human genome is just the start of a new era in genetics research.
