In fact, Morris was provoked into writing News from Nowhere as a refutation of Looking Backward. Beginning with H. G. Wells, there is a body of work which could be characterized as part utopian and part science fiction. Most of these works, like Well's The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds, are primarily science fiction. Of Wells's work, the closest to a classical utopian piece is A Modern Utopia. It is utopian specifically in that Wells held a firm belief in the progress of mankind toward perfection; hence, he confidently pic- Page 20 tured a bright future.

By his sophomore year, he was a member of several artistic circles and came to know Robert Frost, who encouraged him to write. Graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1926, Skinner decided to try his hand at writing for one year, but was dissatisfied with the results and ended up writing a digest, commissioned by his father, on labor/management crises in the coal industry. He also read extensively during this time and found himself drawn to psychology and the theories of John B. Watson. After a brief stay in Greenwich Village and Europe, Skinner enrolled in the Harvard Graduate School where he studied psychology with a dedication unequalled by most students in any field.
