We forget because we do not pay sufficient attention to what we wish to remember in order to imprint it firmly on the mind. A good memory, therefore, depends upon attention to what is to be remembered.
When the four groups were retested on the original list of adjectives, the subjects who had rested forgot less than those who learned unrelated material. Forgetting was greater when other adjectives were learned during the interval and greatest of all when the later adjectives were synonyms of those in the first list.
