It was not until China removed some of the restrictions on travel to Tibet in the 1990s that it became possible to send plant-collecting expeditions to that part of the world. In 2000 I joined the team organized by Dr. Zsolt Debreczy and Dr. István Rácz, principal investigators of the International Dendrological Research Institute in Wellesley, Massachusetts, to travel to eastern Tibet, a region administered by Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. In the early 1970s, Debreczy and Rácz had begun the paramount task of preparing the Dendrological Atlas; in the decades that followed, both traveled to nearly every corner of the temperate climate zone to study and document trees and shrubs.
