The visual social scientist does the same thing with images. Something in the picture, or something glanced at in passing that could be pictured, will suggest an idea or hint at a link to a theory. It is from such moments that insight is born and from such insights that full-blown interpretative and research strategies can be constructed. It should also be noted that other kinds of visual narratives can be mined for insight. Theda Skocpol tells us that: I learned a lot from the hundreds of political cartoons that I collected during the health reform debate.
Most diarists focus on events that stand out in their minds from the basic routine of their everyday lives; but a few, like the eighteenth-century village shopkeeper, Thomas Turner (Vaisey 1984), dwell on the detail of that routine itself. For social scientists and historians this latter type of diary is important, because everyday routine is, by definition, what much of our lives consist of – and it tends to get forgotten. My diary aims to be of this type. But the still visual diary, unlike video and written diaries, does not present a flow of events over time.
These include photographs of each member of the graduating class and various categories of formally defined events, as well as ostensibly ‘candid’ shots which usually focus on students’ leisure-time activities and sometimes hint at mildly illicit pursuits. Consider what might be displayed in many of these shots. How are the graduates represented: close-ups or full-body shots; with an indeterminately generic background or posed somewhere around the campus? Are they smiling or not? What kinds of events are displayed?
