They include all the fungi and most of the bacteria. Autotrophic microorganisms grow only in an inorganic medium . They include photolithotrophic organisms (algae) and chemolithotrophic bacteria. Chemolithotrophic bacteria are less numerous than heterotrophic bacteria but they play an important role in different biogeochemical cycles (nitrogen, sulfur, iron) where they are responsible for different fundamental reactions (nitrification, sulfides and sulfur oxidation, ferrous oxidation). Some bacteria, such as Thiobacillus novellus, can grow either in inorganic (S20l- and CO 2) or organic (peptone) nutrient media and are therefore named mixotrophs.
