He traced the accomplishment to “Nordic” unity. ” As a result, his use of the term “unprogressive” when describing blacks was probably chosen with care. ”22 Even more revealing of his undergraduate mind was Butler’s senior oration, which he delivered at commencement on 4 June 1885.
10 The Civil War seems to have caused relatively little disruption to the Butlers. Military operations and railroads avoided Huntley, and Wiley, in his late forties, did not leave home.
