Before the interview, I explained that we would be covering a range of themes from childhood, schooling, through to a discussion of their work histories. I stressed that the interviews would be confidential and that I would transcribe the taped conversations myself. I assured them that the location of the study, their names and occupations would be disguised. Before the interviews, respondents were sent a background questionnaire which asked for details such as age, parents'/guardians' occupations, marital status, type of education experienced, qualifications, work history and salary.
While not wanting to overemphasize the significance of respondents' childhood experiences, like Gerson (1985:37) I feel that the knowledge and experience gained in childhood play an important role in shaping later perspectives and choices, particularly during adolescence. As discussed in Chapter 1, relying on people's accounts of childhood poses problems for our analysis because of the reconstructive and selective nature of memory. Further, childhood is qualitatively different from adult experience and may be only 'half-remembered' (Coe, 1984:1-3).
As a consequence, my research was greeted with enthusiasm and women were keen to publicize and participate in the project. As was the case for Kitzinger (1987:74), I believe that many of my respondents would not have agreed to be interviewed had I not been a lesbian.
