This resulted in weakening of local authority structures through their policy of ‘assimilation’. The British on the other hand opted for the cheaper option of governing their colonies through indirect rule.

And as mentioned above, this resulted in the creation of countries with many different ethnic groups. Nigeria for instance has more than 250 ethnic groups with very different cultural and linguistic background. In some other cases, some ethnic groups straddle several countries. These artificial borders have caused and continue to cause serious social and political problems to post-colonial African states. In West Africa, arbitrary borders are partly responsible for the long running secessionist war in the Casamance region of Senegal.
