Trying to ford it proved treacherous and the wagon had to be unloaded to get it safely across. A wet, cold day passed before everything was securely on the opposite bank. Without word of other parties or knowledge of the actual location of the gold discoveries, the little group turned up the Arkansas and, after a difficult journey, reached the future site of Granite on Cache Creek.
