Seventy years later, writing to his son-in-law, Porter still recalled the excitement of the times: "I remember our neighbors going into the Mexican War in 1848. . California excitement followed. The road was lined from Independence . . "22 Porter had even more reason to remember the Mexican War. 23 The troops included Henry's fourteen-year-old brother William. Seven-year-old Henry might well have been envious of his older brother's grand adventure. When William returned unscathed a few months later with tales of fabulous Western vistas and easy triumphs, Henry's curiosity about the West was stimulated.
Stephanie Davis shared her account of Porter's early days in Cimarron, New Mexico. Several family friends provided revealing anecdotes and reminiscences.
