There are many campsites along the road. A mining road branches to the right. Take this to a gate, turn left just short of the gate and look for a trail. This trail leads up through timber to emerge into a small valley, just east of Sayres Peak (13,738'). There are signs of old mining activity here, including trails which can be taken north up the valley, then northwest steeply up to gain the ridge at about 13,200'. Follow the ridge to point 13,581', then on north to the summit. It is 3 miles from the gate on the road to the top.
Work up the short cliffs in the trees to above timberline. From here there is a fine snow climb up the southeast face couloir, or one can go to the end of the east ridge and make a long scramble west to the summit.
