With one exception our authors are all psychiatrists. However, this exception, Ludwig von Bertalanffy, to whose genius and courage we are indebted for the original conception of general systems theory and for much of its subsequent development, has also for many years been a psychiatrist by identification in terms of the direction of his work and his concerns, and he is now a psychiatrist by assimilation, having been elected an Honorary Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association at its 1967 annual meeting.
