World Bank. Data and statistics: country classification. Accessed 5 Jan 2009. org/ K2CKM78CC0. Chapter 2 General Perioperative Complications Brendon J. Coventry, Martin Bruening, Robert Whitfield, and Jonathan Yong Overview General surgical perioperative complications comprise a vast field and could consume an entire textbook. This chapter is therefore not intended to be all-inclusive or to provide the full range of possible and potential perioperative problems that can occur nor all of the risk factors that may be operational for any patient in any situation.

Many have developed the valuable capacity to “predict” – not in the “crystal ball” fashion – but to wisely assess the preexisting factors that should be taken into account and if possible, for which some “countermeasure” can be taken to avert, reduce or avoid the effect of the preexisting problem or condition. The list of factors below is not exhaustive nor completely comprehensive, since many individual factors or medical disorders that preexist, develop, worsen, or become apparent during the postoperative period are often included as “surgical complications” or related to surgical postoperative complications.

Therefore, the grading of severity assigned to a particular complication or consequence of surgery may vary considerably, depending on the person or persons making the judgment, and it is increasingly necessary to take this into consideration. The patient can usefully interpret “risk” when the surgeon uses common examples, which the patient might better understand. For example, using the flip of a coin chance – a 50:50 chance, or 50 % chance of it happening and a 50 % chance of it not happening – half of patients will experience this complication and half will not.
