Workers piled into trucks with high racks and went out to the fields, some of which were over twenty miles away. m. m. Members of the same family usually worked together, and Alex and Olivia were on one of the crews headed for the fields to help harvest the crops. The valley typically did not get much summer rain except for an occasional downpour, and so farmers used water from melting snows, high in the mountains, to irrigate their crops. Irrigated rows of crops stretched for three-quarters of a mile, and Alex and the others in his crew were paid by the row rather than by the hour.

The men had an easier time than the women. Then it was back to work until quitting time. On the way home, they heard the warning to bring a raincoat the next day. That is, if they owned one. Tuesday started out with just a few scattered clouds over the valley, but they had become thick and black by midday. Alex could see lightning toward the west, and then he felt a breeze rapidly cool the valley floor. The truck drivers knew rain would soon follow, and the driver of Alex’s crew drove out of the field and tied a heavy tarpaulin over his truck.

He just laughed them off, but he did leave them alone and did not try to pester Olivia again. Alex did not tell his parents what had happened because he knew they would be upset, even angry, and yet they needed Olivia to continue working. The trucks returned to town and dropped off the workers at the same spot near the store, where they bought food for the following day’s lunch and then drove home or hitched a ride with family, friends, or neighbors. Few could afford an icebox, and so their lunchmeat only lasted through the cool night and into the middle of the next day.
