The company traveled to Buffalo by boat via the Erie Canal. The Manning family expected to travel to Columbus, Ohio, with the company, but payment of the fares for the full trip was demanded in Buffalo. Lacking money for the fare, the Manning family left the company and journeyed the remainder of the way on foot, a distance of about 750 miles.

She later presided over a society established in 1854, especially to help clothe the Indians, an organization that evolved into a formal Relief Society, many meetings of which were held in her home. 15 Her doors were open to a variety of meetings, such as a straw braiding school. Before her pioneering in Utah, Patty Bartlett Sessions had been a partner in forging a successful farm life in the wilds of Maine.
