Radicals must judge evil and oppressive behaviour. Radicals are convinced that there are norms and values transcending their own social background, which allow them to perceive other societies in terms of the conflict between good and evil. This is true of religious radicals. The prophets of Page 51 Israel and Jesus Christ announced norms of justice applicable to all nations. But this is equally true of secular radicals. Karl Marx believed that his analysis of class oppression was in some sense applicable to all societies: his message of overcoming human self-alienation had something to say wherever people live.

His Bachelor of Arts degree was awarded to him in 1946. A year later he took his Master of Arts degree in mathematics at Page vi Ohio State University. The University of Fribourg in Switzerland awarded him the doctorate in theology in 1956. More recently (1969-71) he spent two years at the New School in New York City studying and researching in the field of sociology. Over the years he has been the recipient of honorary doctorates from five Canadian and American colleges and universities. Widely known as an author and lecturer, Professor Baum has not only published numerous articles but has also been editor of The Ecumenist and on the editorial boards of the Journal of Ecumenical Studies and of Concilium.

The truth about the human reality, moreover, cannot be discovered equally from all locations within the same culture or the same society, by oppressor and oppressed alike. While Mannheim denounces the ideological deformations operative in the perspective of the oppressor and attributes great importance to the neglected perspective of the oppressed, he admits that the exploited struggling for emancipation also tend to distort their vision.
