He left the University in 1863 in the middle of the Civil War, without a degree, and spent the next years walking, botanizing, and working in the middle west and Canada. In 1867, nearly blinded by a chance accident in a machine shop where he was working in Indianapolis, he rededicated his life to study. After his eye healed he went on a walking tour which led to the Gulf of Mexico and, eventually, to California by boat and to the Yosemite Valley. From 1868 to 1874 he stayed in or near the Yosemite, working at various jobs to maintain himself, traveling and writing, studying the glaciers and mountains.

This is not the place, nor are adequate concepts at our disposal, for a psychoanalysis of one of the most balanced and productive men of his generation. Yet there remains the need to explain his extraordinary deferral of a choice of life, a seeming aimlessness that lasted until the years 1874-1875. It was plainly a time of ferment, in which the pathological and developmental aspects of his personality were both in evidence. Recent psychology places in adolescence the normative crisis of the whole human life cycle, for the character of adolescence is determined by what went before and also crucially determines much that follows.
