Accusers who had confronted Steven in past times and crimes were astounded to discover that he had put the whole thing out of the forefront of his mind. After that, only the twist came out, except that under stress conditions it all flowed through his mind in an endless free association. At such times, he was usually too busy to think about it, or notice it. Invariably, he was quite nonchalant, for the simple reason that his attention had gone elsewhere. The two men - father and, presumably, son - were in Steven's apartment.
Even Steven slightly modified certain thoughts that flitted through his motivational centers. It was agreed that they would keep watch. Each man was assigned two shifts of thirty minutes sentry duty. They worked it out so that, a timer would awaken them, in turn, through a hearing device in the ear. , That was designed to buzz in case a predecessor accidentally fell asleep during his thirty-minute vigil. Mark-Steven, who wasn't afraid of wild girls, noted down his two sentry times with a twisted smile.
It would skim over every horizon, and then when its crew had located a group of Mittendians, an attempt would be made to capture one of them. Thereupon, the other humans would land. The air scooter crew would include Steven on alternate days, a pilot, and two men with capture equipment. The attack force would, of course, be armed, and its members would -again, of course - act with the aggressiveness and disregard for their own skins that armed forces everywhere had always required of human beings.
