Railways in Latin America were primarily constructed to get goods to ports; the first railway was built in Cuba in 1837 to facilitate sugar exports to the United States. But particularly from the 1870s onwards rail networks extended rapidly – in Brazil from a mere 745 kilometres in 1870 to 32,478 km in 1930 and in Mexico from 638 km in 1876 to 19,280 km in 1910.
