Females of such species can benefit from associating with the larger, protective male more than they could in less dimorphic species. Primates are an unusual mammal in the proportion of species that live in more or less stable heterosexual groups. Whether males associate with females depends in part on the payoffs to males from staying with only a few females compared to searching for many estrous females, and the payoffs to the males from defense of females and their offspring. Infanticide by non-father males is seen in primate societies in which usually only one male mates with a number of females, and lactation is of far longer duration than gestation.
Second, the sexes use different strategies at each step (Bradbury and Vehrencamp 1977; Clutton-Brock 1989b; Davies 1991; Emlen and Oring 1977).
