They are open to the public for tours. The corrals can hold 1,300 animals, with the peak season running from fall through early spring. Business hours are Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am to 4 pm and it is closed for all federal holidays.
This period of discovery – from about 1850 till around 1915 – was intense and exciting, with fortunes waiting on the side of every mountain. There was no reason to think it would ever end. But it did, and the mines played out. The miners, suppliers, camp followers, and prostitutes (known as “soiled doves”) knew that when the mines were done the paydays were gone and it was time to move on. From Washoe to Cerro Gordo, Darwin to Bodie, Panamint City to Rhyolite, they followed the prospectors who made the big strikes, and built ways to convert the output of the mines into spendable cash – in their pockets.
