94 The castle was instrumental in the Mortimer rising of the 1320s. 100 In 1342 Carmarthen, Emlyn and Cantref Mawr were leased to Henry of Lancaster, Earl of Derby, for ten years,101 but Edward the Black Prince received the former, as Prince of Wales, the following year,102 while Cantref Mawr remained in Henry’s hands. 103 Like other coastal castles, royal and baronial, Carmarthen was put in a state of readiness in a more or less coordinated response to the French invasion threats of the fourteenth century.
Moreover, it formed the nucleus of Carmarthen Castle’s demesne holding of ‘Redcors’ (see Figure 9); the possibility therefore exists that the very location of the castle’s demesne – south-west of Carmarthen, concentrated around Rhydygors – was derived from its origins as territory immediately appurtenant to Rhydygors Castle, from which it was also provisioned. 21 The grant included ‘Ystrad Tywi and Rhydygors and their bounds’, presumably as a foil to the FitzBaldwins, and perhaps implying that Rhydygors and Ystrad Tywi were indeed separate entities; Rhydygors’s ‘bounds’ may mean east Dyfed.
However, only fragments still survive above ground (Figures 4 and 5). Over 75 per cent of the site now lies beneath County Hall and its car park; the standing remains, which belong to the masonry defences of the inner ward and motte, are conﬁned to the west, north-west and south-west sides. The underlying earthworks, too, have variously been removed, built over or otherwise obscured.
